Owen Silverwood plays with his food!

Owen Silverwood plays with his food!

Playing with food; photographing glittery things; creating “rhythm maps”—these are some the things that the diverse London photographer Owen Silverwood pursues in his creative time. I found the rhythm maps particularly interesting. They are basically an open-shutter that captures some seriously vivid motion—all in observation of music. Some of his subject matter is truly original and very creative. He has some really cool model shots on his website that are definitely atypical. I wanted to show off his bathtub photo because it one of those wicked shots that never really gets old.       Here is the link to his website: http://www.owens...Read more

Keiren at I Miss Mystery

Keiren at I Miss Mystery

& As late as this is, who isn't late these days. Plus, Denver gets influenced from the west coast, and they're always late too, that's why they speed and cut you off in traffic. but anyway, better late then never, or so i've heard. first off, Thank You to all who have given me a platform to comment and share ideas, those who also have given one certain Mario Zoots a platform to comment and share ideas. being that this is the first of my series of blog associated with illiterate magazine, i feel it necessary to clarify my objectives while also giving praise where praise is due. thank you to the members of the illiterate community, as well as all who were in attendence at the exhibit open...Read more

Art Opening: Love Lines Tonight at RedLine

Art Opening: Love Lines Tonight at RedLine

With an opening tonight from 6PM-9PM at Redline, the Valentine's appropriate Love Lines exhibit plays matchmaker between Denver and the art world at large. The group show does what many in Colorado attempt and rarely achieve: pairing local, national and international artists together cohesively. Curated by one of Denver's preeminent contemporary art heavyweights, Robischon Gallery, three distinct interests become apparent in this assembled lineup. A selected group of artists (Halim Alkarim, Jack Balas, Xiong Lijun, Xing Danwen, Yu Fan, Ann Hamilton, Wes Hemperel, Jerry Kunkel, He Jian) represents the gallery's stable of talent. Another clique (Jeff Page, Jonathan Saiz, Ian Fisher, Terry Camp...Read more

I Miss Mystery - Mario Zoots at Illiterate

I Miss Mystery - Mario Zoots at Illiterate

How Mario Zoots' speaks about his images, how he looks and speaks about others' work, is painstakingly important. In not only aesthetics, but also in the all-out war he's staging against our new ventures of pop culture. What people mean to one another, what an image can and of course will become, what obsessions and means to wholeness the art world must go to to achieve a satisfaction of absolutes. These are philosophies Mario accomplishes with 'Zine etiquette, video swagger, and racked-off-the-shelf magazine rearrangements.   There's a modern mystery to the internet. Facelessness, identity obscured by text and syntax, re-appropriation & distribution of images and video. In the su...Read more

Art Opening: Looking For the Face I Had Before The World Was Made

Art Opening: Looking For the Face I Had Before The World Was Made

Like six strangers locked in a room together, the work of six artists currently showing in the MCA Denver's exhibit: Looking For the Face I Had Before The World Was Made, attempt to find something in common to talk about. Approaching the conversation with disparate styles, and from differing locals and era's, the group is left to discuss their mutual choice of universalized subject matter - the unidentified human form. In their archetypal and often nondescript depictions of people and personalities, the six artists, William Stockman, Eric and Heather ChanSchatz, A.G. Rizzoli, Sam Beckett, and Michaël Borremans, enter into a conversation hinged on generality in order to keep everyone eng...Read more

Kseniya Simonova: Sand Drawing

Kseniya Simonova: Sand Drawing

Watching the emotive sand animations of 24 year old Ukranian, Kseniya Simonova, I can only imagine that in the 1980's while I was busy figuring out how much of the sandbox I could fit into my Pampers, on the other side of the world, a little soviet girl was making her first discoveries with negative space and the world's most abundant art supply — dirt. Though sand drawing recieved it's 15 minutes of fame in the US through commercial advertising (Qwest anyone?), Simonova's animations, which communicate compelling tragedy, captivated her nation, and won her $130,000.           In this video Simonova, competing on Ukraine's Got Talent, depicts ...Read more

Better Late Than Never: Where The Wild Things Are:

A friend of mine who directs films once told me, "no matter what you do on a shoot, feed your workers".  I didn't know exactly what was so important about providing snacks to actors until I found myself filming with a five year old for this Where The Wild Things Art . We kept Max happy and pliable with a constant supply of his favorite food: pushpops.  If you're wondering who the Illiterate Max. His name is Armani and   the little boy that plays Max. If you're wandering who the little boy is, his name is Armani, the son of artist and illiterate's drywall expert, Stephen Alerid. He hung out with us on a late November Sunday chasing and being chased by me, Joe and Sander, as the...Read more
