Melanie Pullen's Fashion Statemtent
In her series High Fashion Crime Scenes, LA based photographer Melanie Pullen stages a morbidly humorous perspective on haute couture. Using forensic photos from the LA police files of actual crimes as reference, Pullen’s objective is to comment on the public’s fascination with brutal tragedy at a safe distance, as well as celebrities. Pullen begs the question, "does Hollywood steal the spotlight from important cultural events that aren’t always so fun to read about?" High Fashion Crimes Scenes blurs the line “between reality and the fake spectacle in contemporary culture and the general disassociation that humans feel in regards to issues of...Read more
Kindrid Spirits form Art Duo, Mad Tatters
Mad Tatters, an artist duo made up of Brandan Styles and Ellie Rusinova, seeks to immerse any who dare in a world of their own creation. It is a world quite different than the one we know, a post apocolyptic landscape where isolation and loneliness replace never-ending interconnectivity. Drawing upon the aesthetics of vaudville, steampunk, circuses and carnivals, Mad Tatters is a conceptual vision realized through the combined efforts of Styles and Rusinova using painting, sculpture, music, and fashion. I Left My Heart at the Fabric Lab
It's been such a whirlwind. I first encountered the Fabric Lab when I submitted a few of my dresses to their Haute Art + Fashion Show. At the time I was a student in Boulder, stuck in the bubble, and it was really my first taste of the Denver art scene : I was impressed/inspired/hungry for more. I officially fell in love with the Super Block when they had the fashion show on the sidewalk. picture coutesy Lauire Scavo. Everything I was seeing in the i...Read more
digital beauty: the photography of Iain Crawford
London photographer Iain Crawford’s work is a prime example of just what someone can accomplish with fashion and portrait photography in the digital era. His apparent fascination with motion has allowed him to accomplish a clearly recognizable style that teases the tactile senses of the viewer. Some of his works hold strong elements of color and texture, while others hold clear elements of balance and movement; either way, his work is definitely inspiring and captivating. No matter what the scheme of the image, the works of Iain Crawford never cease to amaze. here is a link to his high quality website: ...Read more
The Riverfront Fashion Series
Last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending the first in a series of three Riverfront Park Fashion shows to be held on Little Raven Street this summer. My initial intention was to write on the Catherine Malandrino collection that was being shown that night, but shortly after arriving I realized that I was far more interested in the clothes and quality of the people in attendance so it will probably be most appropriate to separate this review into thoughts on the event, the people, and the Catherine Malandrino collection. The series is presented by the Westword and a small collection of very dedicated volunteers, and it is truly a class act. This particular show had g...Read more
Shameless Self Promotion
After you've partied your booties off tonight after the Creative Kegger, tomorrow, I invite you to peruse the local fashion scene, in the most appropriate of places: East Colfax. Part of the Fabric Lab's PROTOTYPE series, tomorrow night my designs will be showcased along with Studio Yoshida and Phryne Metal. We're doing it up right, having the fashion show stroll down the sidewalk (weather permitting). It's summertime, why not? The inspiration for my line was bicyclable fashion. It might be the tomboy in me, but I like to wear dresses, and I like to bicycle, and most times I like doing both at the same time. Voila, we have the bicycle fashion show down the sidewalk. A classic in my mind, ...Read more

The Survival of Independent Fashion... ?
A few years ago when I started throwing fashion shows, the title "Independent Fashion Designer" bestowed itself upon me. One of the motivating factors in my relocation to San Francisco was their well known independent fashion design "scene," as I've come to call it. The independent design scene is somewhat of a mysterious one. Fun little odd collections of reconstructed clothing and one of a kind pieces tucked away in boutiques make a fashionista's mind run wild in an Independent Design Fairy Land. Lately, though, especially with the economy looking down, this fairy land has turned into something of a horrifically bad trip. While I was in SF, I realized that bei...Read more
Andrea Crews + Fashion Activism
While talking with Adam Tinnell (of the Free Boutique & The Boulevardier blog) the other day, he mentioned Andrea Crews , who I had heard about but never bothered to look up. I looked AC up, and VOILA, I'm in fashion love, again. First off, Andrea Crews is an eco.conscious reconstructed designer line. The founder and designer, Maroussia Rebecq, titles herself as an artist and an activist, which I truly admire and have been too shy to title myself. Sometimes when you just say fashion designer people don't take you seriously. AC is fully aware that fashion is an art form, and while respectfully treating it as such, AC gets the point across to the larger audience. What you wear and how y...Read more
