You should be (p)artying Friday
Now that I'm once again a CO. dweller, after making the move from Minneapolis, I can actually partake in the regular First Friday festivities, instead of just hearing about them. April 3rd is fixed to be a typical epic first friday night in Denver, with exhibitions including two illiterate contributors, and one of our first ever featured artists, way back when we were a student rag at CU Boulder.
In anticipation of Friday arting, go to the
Lab at Belmar for Feminism and Co.'s "Bitch: The History and Politics of a Word." This is the first in the weekly series program and tonight features Melinda Barlow, "bitch extraordinaire and professor of film studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder." This should be a fascinating run of shows and discussions and probably at times discomforting too, except in a good way. If you miss it tonight, like I said, its up for a week, when the next one begins. The reception is at 6pm and the program at 6:30pm, $10 ($5 members).
Also on the agenda for pre-friday is the group show at
David B Smith Gallery on Santa Fe featuring
Ricky Allman,
Grant Barnhart and
Niall McClelland. I'm interested to see how this show will be hung because of how the pieces might compliment or detract from one another. either way, sweet work. The reception is from 6-8pm with the artistsin attendence.
I'm always excited to actually see art take place during First Fridays. Catch live painting by some of Colorado's finest including: Mike Graves, Scot Lefavor (illiterate's first featured artist back in issue 1) Markham Maes, Sam Turner and Hack at the TS Board Shop from 5-9pm, 135 S. Broadway.
Last but certainly not least, checkout the second to last night of the
Rule Gallery Group Show which centers around the "power and intensity of the color red." illiterate contributor
Mark Sink and my old art teacher,
Yumi Roth, show alongside a whole slew of other artists, photographers and sculptors (Xi Zhang, Jason Martes Bryan Boettiger, Dale Chisman, Lisa Dawn Gold, Kim Dickey, Charles DiJulio, Mark di Suvero, Mary Ehrin, Wilma Fiori, Charlotte Gottenkieny, Eric Havelock-Bailie, Pard Morrison, Margaret Neuman, & Kristen Hatgi, Sandy Skoglund, Jeff Starr). This goes from 6-9pm at 227 Broadway.
Well ladies and gents, that's the lineup. Make sure to bike safe, buckle up, avoid stumbling and keep that booze in a brown bag away from the art. See you there!
