Intro to the Prose Blog
My name is Simone, and I was named after Simone de Beauvoir. I have a bookshelf tatooed on my upper arm. I own well over 2000 books. I've worked in bookstores or libraries for the last eleven years; I'm 25. I read at least a book a week, as well as a plethora of print and online magazines. I use words like "plethora". I read and speak in English German and Spanish. My Dad read the History of Class Consciousness to me in its entirety the week I was born (septmeber 20, 1983, which makes me a Virgo in the Zodiac and a Pig in Chinese Astrology). I'm the fiction editor, among many other things here at illiterate. Suffice to say that Reading is What I Do.
Welcome to my Prose Blog. I know blogs aren't supposed to really be about the person who writes them, so this'll be your one chance to get to know me before I start ranting about all things Black and White. Here are some things I want to cover in this blog: publishing and translation (did you know that the translator of Wetlands, which is the subject of my first real blog post, translates Pearly Mound (the heroine's petname for her clit) into Snail Tail?); punctuation; What I'm Reading Now; judging a book by its cover; oldies but goodies; the new cannon; why toilet paper is more useful than a degree in English Literature; people who use books to elevate themselves above others; people who use books to prop up tables; the future of the printed word (as opposed to these new-fangled electronic reading devices); Jane Austin movies; Chuck Palanhuik movies; all sorts of books being made into movies; trends in juvenile ficton; anecdotes from the library I work at; fiction vs. non-fiction; poetic prose pieces (love em or hate em?); and books that should be written. I will write about many other things as well, and I can't promise that all of them will be about Reading, since I do also have other interests.
I hope you enjoy the Prose Blog. It is my goal to make you aware of things you didn't know before, make you think about things you already knew in a new way, make you pee your pants with laughter and throw up a little bit too. All in one, this is Printed Love.
