Welcome to the ILLITERATE Film Blog
Hi. My name is Isis and I love the moving image. I studied experimental film, animation, video, and installation art at the University of Colorado. Unbeknownst to me I was stumbling onto the legacy of Stan Brakhage - the founder of the program- and film for me was never the same. Suddenly there was an entire world beyond the theater, and even beyond narrative structure, that I never knew existed. I feel like I came into myself as an artist (with still much more growth to come) as well as learned to appreciate all different flavors of the moving image.
While on a typical Friday night you might catch me at the local megaplex, that is not what this blog is about (okay, maybe it will be sometimes but don't come to expect it). What this blog is going to be about is art. It is going to be about innovators of the past and present who are smart, different, and probably (but not necessarily) off your radar. I want this blog to get you excited about about experimental films, about directors you have never heard of, about directors you have heard of but never got around to watching, about films that are old, about films that are new, about films that don't make sense, about films that do make sense, and about animation (yes there is animation out there for adults and it rocks!) I hope to bring contributors on that are smart and engaging and who have their own voice - some that are a bit more along the mainstream than me , others who could talk about the most recent video installation at MoMA for hours. If you are interested in being one of those contributors email me at isis@illiteratemagazine.com
Since this blog is typically not going to to be about me, I am going to make it so for about five minutes. This is the most recent manifestation of my fascination with dreams, memory, love, film deteriorating before our eyes, and all things French:
So there you have it. A bit of what you can expect from my blog, and a bit of what you can expect from me. I hope you enjoy what's to come.
Love art, explore life, and dream a little dream.
