Betsy Walton
SCRATCHING THE SURFACE
with Betsy Walton

Hello my name is….
Betsy Walton
I was born in …
Lawrence, Kansas
And currently live here in…
Portland, OR

I am trained in the art(s) of…
Printmaking. Painting. Drawing.
The objects I make could be described as…
carefully layered, precisely colored snapshots of an imaginary space with a tinge of mythic narrative.
My process involves….
painting colors, choosing shapes, reading, looking at art, making drawings, listening to music, learning about the world, being patient, making decisions, solving problems and taking risks.

My favorite tool of the trade is…
10/0 Liner brush.
I am most influenced by…
Color, light, shapes and the human experience. A long list of artists including: Kiki Smith, Leonora Carrington, Kandinsky, Terry Winters, Jessica Stockholder, and Agnes Martin.
An average day for me looks like…
Eat, exercise. Look, paint, think. Repeat. Read or write a little, and of course a little time browsing the interweb and checking email.

When I’m not making things, you might find me…
on a hilltop.
Something most people don’t know about me is…
I like math.

The best advice I’ve received so far…
believe in the work. Work whether you feel like it or not.
The luckiest thing that’s ever happened to me…
I don't believe in luck.
